In celebration of the hundred year anniversary of Gabriel Dumont’s death, the Gabriel Dumont Institute commissioned this piece to be used for a poster (below).
Interpretation: The buffalo skull and robe represents Dumont as "Chief of the Hunt" and the leather mitt shows the Metis flower beadwork. The red Metis war flag represents the 1885 Metis Resistance. The small postcard is torn to show the attempt to destroy Dumont and the Metis during the Resistance. The faint image of Dumont without his hat, as well as the hat hanging on the skull, show he is still here, but only in spirit. For more on this painting click here then click on June 5, 2006.
